The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary members have been critical in securing recognition and benefits for veterans for over 100 years.
The Auxiliary’s Legislative program provides information and assistance to American Legion Auxiliary members to advocate for the legislative agenda of The
American Legion. Each year the American Legion provides continual updates of the progress of their
legislative agenda for our convenience and guidance.
Auxiliary members can and should support specific legislation supporting veterans and their families while being careful not to support or
appear to support a particular candidate or political party. For example, do not wear your ALA branded clothing to a specific candidate’s town hall or
rally. However, guidelines for a “Meet the Candidates” forum is provided on the Auxiliary website. Members may write letters, make phone calls ,
or meet with their legislators to promote The American Legion’s public policy objectives,
The Advocacy Guide
gives clear guidance on how to successfully advance veteran support in these areas. Reporting to National all the Auxiliary’s activities undertaken in the legislative program is especially effective in maintaining The American Legion’s influence on passing veteran benefits legislation through Congress.
